What’s going on – With this weather?

Winter on the Texas Gulf Coast is in full swing. We just went through a few days of freezing weather and reports are floating around of fish kills along the middle and lower Texas Gulf Coast. I plan to take ride around the Sabine Lake’s shallow water areas to see how our shallow water Redfish and Trout are holding up. Luckly the upper coast has so much deeper water than a lot of the middle to lower Texas Coast that we shouldn’t have the same problem. Lets keep our fingers crossed on that one.

Before the freezing weather set in Redfish and Trout were being caught with great success wading or staking-out over shell and mud flats. With the bays vacant of shad and shrimp just look for the Mullet. Find the mullet and use your Stake-out Stik (click here to see our Stiks) to hold you on the fish and slow your lure retrieve.

Once this weather starts to warm the fish should really turn on. Get out and Stake-out.

What’s going on – On the Flats?

Cold fronts are hitting every other week and it’s time to be on the water. Water temperatures are dropping and north winds are draining the marshes. It’s the time of year for trout, redfish, and flounder fisherman to stay busy. Trophy trout start moving on the flats, while their younger more gullible kin are schooled up chasing shrimp out in the middle of the bays. Redfish are right behind the trout schooling up for the easy shrimp dinners. The founder run is starting and those flat fish will be stacked on the marsh drains. Look for structure on the flats and slow down, you never know if this will be your double digit Trout year. Use a Stake-out Stik on the flats for some good trophy trout action or stay on a school of trout by staking out instead of drifting through them. Using a Stake-out Stik to keep you in position on your favorite marsh drain will keep your lures in front of the flounder longer and help make your fall a festive time of year.

What’s going on with the 2009 Texas Redfish Series – Closing out the Year

The 2009 Texas Redfish Series finished up it’s last event in Port Lavaca, Texas. Tournament day started out with a calm morning and ended with wind gusting to 20 mph. The wind didn’t keep Demetric Wells and Leslie Littles from from weighing in a respected 14.88 to not only take the win, but it helped them take home the 2009 Team of the Year Trophy. The top five teams kept Wells and Littles nervous with weights trailing right behind them. Team Royal Purple/Stake-out Stik, of Dustin Via and Myself finished fifth with 14.58 pounds, just .01 pounds behind fourth place.

A special thanks to the Texas Redfish Series for putting on a great 2009 Series.

What’s going on in the Marsh – Paul sticks it to the Redfish

What a difference a day makes, but no matter what direction the wind blew the Stake out Stik did the trick. We have been enjoying a very nice Redfish bite with some quality trout thrown in, thanks to the universal coverage of the Stake out Stik.

We have had West, South, Southwest and North wind all in one week. Now if that won’t beat all I don’t know what will! Paul and I staked out from the front of the boat in 20 mph South winds and caught 10 nice Reds and 3 Trout in a few hours this afternoon. Only to be outdone this weekend with 30 plus Reds and a few trout in a nice West wind.

Its all about versatility, and there is NO way we would have managed without the compatability in the Stake out Stik.

What’s going on in the Tournament Scene – HT3 Redfish Series comes to Port Neches, Texas

This past weekend the HT3 Series came to Port Neches, Texas for it’s first ever Texas Redfish Tournament. The HT3 Redfish Series is a two day redfish tournament where anglers pair up and fish for two slot redfish. Joe Peddy and Myself fished the tournament together as did sixteen other fisherman. Joe is a member of Team TKF (www.texaskayakf isherman.com) and usually fishes out of his Native Kayaks. LB Outfitters sponsors Joe and the rest of Team TKF, so it was good to fish with a fisherman who uses our Stake-out Stiks on a regular basis.

For the HT3 Series we fished out of a poling skiff and covered shallow flats to deep water drop offs. Our most productive bite came from staking out in shallow water fishing deep drop-offs throwing shrimp tails under popping corks and jigging pink Devil Eyes.

Our two day weight of 28.54 was good enough for first place.

I’d like to thank the HT3 Redfish Series for coming to Port Neches and hosting a great tournament.

What’s Going On in the Fishing Community – 2009 Lydia Ann Fly Masters Tournament

LB Outfitters was proud to be a sponsor for the 2009 Lydia Ann Fly Masters Tournament held July 18th in Aransas Pass, Texas. This was the first annual Lydia Ann Fly Masters Tournament directed by Palmer Simpson and with over 50 anglers and $5223.86 raised it was a great success.

The purpose of the LYDIA ANN FLY MASTERS tournament is to bring Fly Fishing anglers together and help support a wonderful charitable organization. The 2009 Beneficiary will be CASTING FOR RECOVERY.

Casting for Recovery® (CFR), founded in 1996, is a national non-profit support and educational program for breast cancer survivors. They enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors by offering no-cost retreats tailored to promote and support mental and physical healing through shared experiences and the learning of new skills. At the end of 2008 CFR has served 3,500 women through the delivery of 269 retreats, helped by over 1,000 volunteers nationwide.

We want to thank all the time and effort that went into the first annual Lydia Ann Fly Masters Tournament and hope the future will be as good as the past.

What’s going on with Shallow Water Bass – Got Shallow water? Get an Ultralight Pushpole!

Corey Stanley holds up 10 pounds of proof that shallow water Bass fishing produces big fish in Toledo Bend. Corey poles his Champion Bass Boat through the shallows of Toledo Bend sight casting to bass. When the sun light and water conditions make it hard for sight casting Corey will blindcast floating frogs.

This 10 pound bass ate a floating frog in less than two feet of water as Corey poled his Champion bass boat using his telescoping Ultralight Pushpole.

What’s going on in the Marsh – Boat Position was Key

I wanted to share a few pictures of proof that the Stake-out Stik helps me in the Marsh. I have had the opportunity to use your awesome product in and out of every weather scenario I know to fish, and lately it’s been wind and rain.

I recently fished with a couple of out of town friends who don’t get on the water as much as I do and my Stiks made it so easy for me to position the boat over a spot I frequent for Redfish. I used my two Stiks to position the boat sideways so they could cover all areas and fancast the entire length of the Hilltop we were fishing. We were using topwaters and spinnerbaits. And the result was phenomenal .

The conditions were SW winds 10-15 and with this offbeat wind its been important to set up correctly.

What’s going on in the Shop – Ultralight Pushpoles

Our products are inspired by fisherman and our telescoping Ultralight Pushpole is reaching out to tournament bass anglers. Our Stake-out Stiks caught the eye of a hard-core bass angler who was looking to find his inner stealth, but didn’t have a tool to get him where he needed to be.

Where did he need to be? Where the fish are of course.

He was sightcasting for bass and needed a pushpole that was strong enough to handle his bass boat, but short enough to hide from his competition. That secretive young man sparked inspiration and little did he know I was years into a project that would get a telescoping Pushpole into his hands before his next tournament. Our two piece fiberglass shafts and one of a kind “Y” foot was just what he needed to excel his game and give him that extra push he needed.
